Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

in Dalton, Georgia

What It Is

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a surgical procedure that can restore a youthful appearance to the eye area by removing excess or loose skin and fat tissue, leaving you with a smooth and more alert appearance. Blepharoplasty can be performed for either cosmetic or visual purposes, and patients include men and women. As some people age, the upper eyelid begins to sag, and may eventually interfere with the person's visual field. Blepharoplasty can restore the patient's visual field to what it was years before. Often though, people choose blepharoplasty to roll back the hands of time.

The Procedure

Georgia Eyelid Surgery

If you are interested in blepharoplasty, the first step is to schedule a consultation with one of our surgeons (please see our general cosmetic procedures page for tips to help you at your initial consultation). You doctor will conduct an eye exam and assess tear production. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, please bring them with you.

Be sure to discuss your goals and expectations with your doctor during the initial consultation. Your doctor will help you decide whether to do all four eyelids or just the upper or lower ones, and whether skin as well as fat will be removed.

At the time of surgery, you will be given a local anesthesia to numb the area around your eyes and a mild sedative to help you stay relaxed during the procedure. You'll be awake during the surgery, but relaxed and insensitive to pain.

The procedure takes one to three hours, depending on the extent of the surgery. A small incision is made following the natural line of your eyelids, excess fat is removed and sagging skin trimmed, and the incision is closed with very fine stitches.

After Your Surgery

  • Your eyes will be bandaged so you will need someone to drive you home
  • Your eyelids may feel tight and sore as the anesthesia wears off, but you will be given pain medication to ease this discomfort.
  • You will also be given eye drops to alleviate any dry or itchy feeling in your eyes.
  • You will come back to Professional Eye Associates a few days after the surgery to have your stitches removed.

Side Effects

After surgery, you may experience some of the following temporary side effects:

  • Bruising, lasting from two weeks to a month
  • Dry or itchy sensation in your eyes
  • Excessive tearing
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred sight
  • Swelling at the corner of the eyelid
  • Difficulty closing your eyes

Results

You should be able to read or watch TV in two or three days. Most people feel ready to return to work in 7 to 10 days. You may be sensitive to sunlight and wind for several weeks, so you should wear sunglasses and a special sun block made for eyelids.

Healing is a gradual process, and your scars may remain slightly pink for six months or more after surgery. Eventually, though, they'll fade to a thin, nearly invisible white line.

The positive results of your eyelid surgery, a more alert and youthful look, will last for years. For many people, these results are permanent.
