What It Is

Professional Eye Associates is pleased to offer BOTOX® Cosmetic to our patients. BOTOX® Cosmetic, approved by the FDA in 2002, is a non-surgical treatment that temporarily smoothes frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead creases, crows' feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. BOTOX® Cosmeticis actually a purified protein derived from Clostridium Botulinum (botulinum toxin) that reduces the activity of muscles that cause wrinkles. It is completely safe.

How It Works

Wrinkles, appearing over time, are partly the result of muscle activity in your face. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscles of your face. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles, reducing the activity of the muscles that cause wrinkles and giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

The Procedure

You will first have a consultation with a Professional Eye Associates doctor. This is your time to ask any questions you may have, discuss your medical history, and make sure your expectations of BOTOX® Cosmetic are realistic. Your doctor will examine your ability to move certain muscles to decide where to place the injections, then will administer the injections. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes and no anesthesia is required. Any discomfort you may feel is usually minimal and quite brief.

Side Effects

Because BOTOX® Cosmetic is a non-surgical procedure, there is no recovery time needed nor any special assistance after the procedure.

You may experience mild, temporary side effects such as:

• Eyelid droop
• Nausea
• Tenderness, swelling and redness of the injection site

The Results

You will notice an improvement in the look of fine lines and wrinkles within days. These results generally last up to 4 months.

Many people have concerns that BOTOX® Cosmetic will create an inability to smile or frown - this is not the case though. While the results of BOTOX® Cosmetic are certainly visible, the muscle activity that causes wrinkles has not been ceased entirely, merely reduced. Your face will not be blank. You will still be able to frown or look surprised; you just won't have wrinkles when you do so.
