Cataracts
in Dalton, Georgia
Cataracts develop when the natural lens of your eye becomes cloudy. It is a naturally occurring, age-related condition that most people experience in their 60's and 70's (although some people may develop cataracts at younger or older ages). The cataract surgeons of Professional Eye Associates use state-of-the-art technology for this no shot, no stitch procedure. For most patients, only a local anesthetic is needed, which results in a more rapid recovery.
Symptoms
As many people age, cataracts, or the clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye, are an increasingly common problem. Symptoms of cataracts may include:
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Double vision in the affected eye
- Poor night vision
- Color distortion
- Difficulty with glare
Treatment
Professional Eye Associates offers the latest technology in cataract care to help patients regain the freedom of clear vision. Today cataract surgery is one of the world's safest, most commonly performed surgical procedures, with a low incidence of pain and a quick recovery time. At Professional Eye Associates, our experienced surgeons perform cataract surgery on an out-patient basis in our state-of-the-art Surgery Center.
During this procedure, numbing drops are applied to the eye, and you have the option of taking a mild sedative to help you relax. The surgeon creates a small incision, and then the cataract is broken up and removed from the eye using high-energy sound waves, a process called phacoemulsification. After the clouded lens is removed, a new intraocular lens (an IOL) is inserted into the eye. There are several IOLs to choose from, depending upon your vision needs and lifestyle. After using this special small incision, the eye remains tightly sealed by the natural outward pressure within the eye, and stitches are usually not required.
Your eyes, your choice
Further advancements in cataract care now include not only clearer vision, but sharper vision as well. At Professional Eye Associates, cataract patients can now choose a standard "monofocal" lens (a lens that provides good vision at one focal point, usually distance) or you may choose a new premium lens that can improve vision at all distances, allowing some patients complete freedom from glasses and/or contact lenses. Professional Eye Associates is proud to be the only practice in Northwest Georgia to offer all three of the latest lenses: ReStor, ReZOOM, and Crystalens®. To find out more, please see our IOL Information Page.
