Conductive Keratoplasty (CK)

in Dalton, Georgia

If reading glasses or bifocals have become a hassle, you might want to consider CK - Conductive Keratoplasty. At Professional Eye Associates, we want to help you achieve your personal best vision, so we offer this non-laser vision-correction procedure for the treatment of presbyopia and hyperopia (two types of farsightedness). Thanks to this three-minute procedure, many patients are seeing clearly again.

The Procedure

Using radiofrequency (RF), CK changes how the eye focuses light by modifying the shape of the cornea. Numbing drops are placed in the eye, then the doctor positions a speculum to comfortably hold your eye open. A wand transmitting controlled RF energy is used to apply heat in a circular pattern on the outer cornea, shrinking small areas of corneal tissue. RF is directed at the edges of the cornea to minimize interference with your pupil (line of sight).

Conductive Keratoplasty in Dalton

If you have good distance vision, but just need glasses for seeing up-close, CK may be performed in just one eye. That eye is corrected for near vision, and then both eyes work together for good all-around sight. However, if your prescription requires treatment in both eyes, the procedure is completed in both eyes on the same day. Afterward, you do not need to wear a patch and there are no visible signs of having undergone treatment. You can usually return to normal activities the very next day, and can expect your vision to improve over the following week, with full vision correction expected within three weeks.

CK is a painless and comfortable procedure. You may feel some slight pressure from the speculum holding your eye open. Following the procedure, you may have some mild discomfort, such as a "foreign object" sensation in the eye, but this usually goes away within 24 hours of the procedure.

Possible Side Effects

Complications following CK are rare, but you may experience a few side effects that ordinarily subside within 24-48 hours. These include:

  • Discomfort and/or foreign-object sensation
  • Glare
  • Halos around lights
  • Overcorrection
  • Watery eyes.

Choosing CK

If you are considering vision correction surgery, such as conductive keratoplasty, you will need to have a complete eye exam. Our doctors will review your vision history, eye health and overall health, as well as discussing your lifestyle, vision needs, and the risks and benefits of this procedure. Our doctors and staff will also answer any questions you have about the procedure.

You may be a good candidate for CK if you:

  • Are over age 40
  • Had great vision your whole life
  • Require reading glasses for fading near vision.
