Cataracts FAQ

in Dalton, Georgia

What is a cataract?

Cataract is a clouding of the lens in your eye, occurring naturally as you age.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

Cataracts in Ellijay
  • Blurred vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Poor night vision
  • Color distortion
  • Glare

How are cataracts treated?

Through a procedure called phacoemulsification, in which the affected lens is broken up and removed from the eye using high-energy sound waves.

After the natural lens is removed, an intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted in its place. There are several IOLs to choose from; your Professional Eye Associates doctor can help you choose the best lens for your vision needs. For detailed IOL information, please visit our IOL Faq page.

Is cataract treatment painful?

No. You are given drops to numb your eye, and have the option of taking a mild sedative if you find it difficult to relax. Your doctor will use a small support-device to keep your eye lid open during the cataract procedure, and it may cause a feeling of slight pressure, but it is not painful.

How much time will I need to recover from treatment?

A protective eye patch will be placed on your eye after surgery, and someone will need to drive you home. You should rest for the remainder of the day, and return to Professional Eye Associates the following day to have your eye patch removed and go through an eye examination. Most patients are able to drive and commence routine activities the day after surgery.

What type of results can I expect from treatment?

Immediately after the procedure you will notice visual changes, and these changes will become greater over time.

Are there side effects from treatment?

Although visual changes are almost instantaneous, full visual clarity takes time. While your eyes are adjusting you may experience mild side effects such as:

  • Irritation and discomfort
  • Redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Rings or halo vision
  • Light sensitivity
