What is an ophthalmologist?

How is an ophthalmologist different from an optometrist?

Doctors of optometry (OD) specialize in vision problems, treating vision conditions with spectacles, contact lenses, low vision aids and vision therapy. ODs are not MDs, and in most cases they do not treat eye diseases or perform eye surgery.

How can an ophthalmologist help me?

An ophthalmologist can help you with any vision troubles you may have. Ophthalmologists perform general eye exams, fit patients with glasses or contact lenses, and recommend and perform eye surgeries including cataract removal, IOL implantations, LASIK, and glaucoma treatments.

If I don't have vision troubles, should I still consult an ophthalmologist?

Because your eyes change as you age, you should consult an ophthalmologist every year or two. If you are over age 60, you should undergo a routine eye exam each year. If caught early enough, many vision conditions can be decreased in severity.

You should see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible if you:

• Experience difficulty reading
• Have a family history of vision or eye problems
• See spots or flashes of light
• Have blurred vision or any other vision difficulties.

What can I expect at my routine eye exam?

A comprehensive eye exam includes a variety of brief tests and evaluations to determine the health of your eyes and the quality of your eyesight. Depending on your needs, your eye exam will last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes.

Be aware that your ophthalmologist may dilate your pupils, which could affect your near vision for a period of time after your exam. You will be asked a number of questions about your health, your vision, and your personal and family medical history. You will be given as much time as you need to have your questions answered, allowing you to leave feeling educated and comfortable with any recommended procedures.

Does an eye exam hurt?

Parts of an eye exam may feel abnormal or slightly uncomfortable to you, but rest assured there is nothing painful about a routine eye examination.
