Presbyopia FAQ's

in Dalton, Georgia

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is a naturally occurring inability of the eye to focus at all distances, typically noticed when fine print starts to blur. Presbyopia is caused by a gradual loss of flexibility in the natural lens of your eye, combined with a weakening of the tiny muscles that control its shape, and gets worse as you age.

Do I have Presbyopia?

Presbyopia in Calhoun, Georgia

Since this condition is age-related, you will experience presbyopia at some point in your life. You may have presbyopia now if you are over about age 40, and:

  • Find that print appears unclear at normal reading distances
  • Need to hold reading materials at arms length to focus properly
  • Experience eye strain or headaches when performing close-up tasks

How is Presbyopia treated?

There are three options available to combat presbyopia: glasses, contact lenses or surgery.

Many types of glasses are available to match your specific visual needs, and you should consult with a Professional Eye Associates doctor to determine the prescription that will best work for you.

If wearing glasses isn't for you, consider contacts or Conductive Keratoplasty (CK), the surgical treatment for Presbyopia.

What is Conductive Keratoplasty (CK)?

A non-laser vision-correction procedure that uses radiofrequency to modify the cornea's curvature, and thus change how the eye refracts, or bends, light. When bent at the right angle, light rays entering the eye will focus exactly on the retina, the eye's "camera film", and give you clear vision.

Is CK treatment painful?

No. CK takes three minutes to perform and does not involve lasers or incisions of any kind. Your doctor will use a type of speculum to keep your eye open during the procedure, and it may cause a feeling of slight pressure, but is not painful.

How much time will I need to recover from CK treatment?

Because CK is a non-invasive procedure, there is no recovery time needed. Once the procedure is complete, you don't have to wear a patch and will have no visible signs of having undergone treatment. You can usually return to normal activities the day after treatment.

What type of results can I expect from CK treatment?

You can expect your vision to improve in about a week's time.

Are there side effects from CK treatment?

While your eyes are adjusting you may experience mild side effects such as:

  • Discomfort and/or foreign-object sensation
  • Glare
  • Halos
  • Overcorrection
  • Watery eyes
