Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is when the macula is damaged or begins to deteriorate. The macula is a small area at the back of the eye that allows us to see fine details. When it is damaged, central vision becomes impaired, making common, everyday activities difficult or impossible. Macular degeneration typically occurs in older adults. At this time there is no cure for macular degeneration, but new treatments are available to help preserve vision and slow the progression of this disease.
Pterygium
A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of the conjunctiva - the clear, thin tissue that lays over the white part of the eye. The causes are unknown, but pterygiums seem occur most frequently in people who are often outdoors with excess exposure to sunlight and wind. They are painless, and treatment is not required unless the pterygium begins to obstruct vision, then it can be surgically removed.
