Presbyopia

in Dalton, Georgia

Presbyopia is the medical term for age-related farsightedness, a phenomenon that happens to many people around age 40, causing people with normally good vision to have difficulty reading and seeing things up close. Presbyopia develops due to the gradual loss of flexibility in the natural lens of the eye. With less flexibility, the eye can no longer change shape and thus has a harder time focusing up close. The result is blurred near vision.

Symptoms

Presbyopia in Dalton Georgia

You may be presbyopic if:

  • Print appears unclear at normal reading distances;
  • You need to hold reading materials at arms' length to focus properly;
  • You experience eye strain or headaches when performing close-up tasks.

Treatment

Presbyopia can be corrected through the use of eyeglasses and/or contact lenses, Conductive Keratoplasty (CK), or intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Most people who are presbyopic correct their vision through the use of eyewear. Options include:

  • Reading Glasses: This is a good option for people who have good uncorrected distance vision, but just need a little help while doing up-close tasks, like reading or sewing. These can purchased over the counter, or you can request a prescription from one of our doctors.
  • Bifocal Glasses: These lenses contain two prescriptions - the main part of the lens corrects your distance vision (whether you are nearsighted or farsighted), and the lower portion contains a stronger prescription to allow you to see close-up again.
  • Progressive Addition Glasses: These lenses are similar to bifocals, but the transition between prescriptions is more gradual and there is no visible line on the lens.
  • Contact lenses: There are special multifocal lenses designed specifically for people with presbyopia. They are similar to bifocal lenses, but fit on the surface of your eye. Or you can talk with our doctors about monovision options, where one eye wears a distance prescription and the other wears a prescription for near vision.

Your eyes, your choice

If you're tired of dealing with glasses or contacts, you may want to consider surgery. Professional Eye Associates offers Conductive Keratoplasty (CK), a quick and painless surgical option that reshapes the cornea and improves near vision. For more information, please see our CK Information Page.

Further advancements in treating presbyopia now includes the use of intraocular lenses (IOLs). At Professional Eye Associates, patients can now choose to replace their natural lens with a new premium lens that improves vision at all distances, and allowing some patients complete freedom from glasses and/or contact lenses. Professional Eye Associates is proud to be the only practice in Northwest Georgia to offer all three of the latest lenses: ReStor, ReZOOM, and crystalens. To find out more, please see our IOL Information Page.
