Cataracts

Cataracts_photoCataracts develop when the natural lens of your eye becomes cloudy. Although cataracts can occur earlier than usual due to congenital conditions or from injury to the eye, it is most commonly a naturally occurring, age-related condition that begins in our 50's and progressively worsens over time. The cataract surgeons of Professional Eye Associates have been rated the top eye surgeons in the United States. And our eye doctors use state-of-the-art technology to provide a no-stitch, no-shot, no-pain, same-day cataract surgery experience. This is experience you can trust.

Professional Eye Associates
offers the latest technology in cataract care to help our patients regain the freedom of clear vision. Today, cataract surgery is one of the safest, most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world. At Professional Eye Associates, our experienced surgeons perform the most advanced cataract surgery techniques using state-of-the-art technology. And you can relax because Professional Eye Associates is proud to have the only AAAHC-certified, All-Eye-Same Day-Surgery-Center in the Northwest Georgia area located at our Dalton office. Which means, when you have surgery with us, everyone who cares for you, from start to finish, is completely dedicated and skilled at caring for eye surgery patients. That's focused care you can trust – right in your own backyard!

During cataract surgery, numbing and dilating drops are placed on the eye, and you are given mild sedatives to help you relax. Your surgeon will create a tiny incision, and will soften the cataract using high-energy sound waves, a process called phacoemulsification, before removing the cataract material. After the cataract is removed, a new intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted into the eye. There are several IOLs to choose from, depending upon your vision needs and lifestyle. The tiny incision is self-sealing and stitches are usually not required. Most patients don't feel anything during the surgery. And after surgery, most experience no pain, but some may feel only mild irritation over the first few days.

Your Eyes, Your Choice

The eye doctors at Professional Eye Associates have the ability to help you to see better with less dependence on glasses, just like our LASIK patients! We offer a wide variety of options to choose from. Cataract patients can choose to be less dependent on glasses with a multifocal IOL or a toric IOL. Multifocal IOLs help patients to see better at all distances with much less dependence on glasses. If you have astigmatism, a Toric IOL will help you to see well without glasses for a fixed distance, usually far focus. Patients can also elect to have a standard "monofocal" lens which is the basic lens that is covered by insurance for routine cataract surgery. These are your eyes so you should have a choice of all your options. Professional Eye Associates is proud to be the only practice in Northwest Georgia to offer all the latest lenses: ReStor, Crystalens®, and Tecnis Multifocal. More choices means more customized care for your individual vision needs. Isn't that what you deserve? To find out more, please see our IOL Information page.
