Experience Better Vision With PRK Eye Surgery in Northwest Georgia

At Professional Eye Associates, our experienced, board-certified surgeons use leading technology and a personalized approach to deliver safe, effective vision correction. With accessible care across Northwest Georgia, we’re here to help you take the next step toward clearer, more confident vision.

PRK is an advanced option for clearer vision that’s similar to LASIK. PRK can be an excellent option for patients with thin corneas, dry eye concerns, or those who may not qualify for LASIK but still want greater visual freedom.

Ready to experience the world without the need for glasses or contacts? Schedule your PRK consultation today at one of our four Northwest Georgia locations!

What Is PRK?

PRK (or Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a laser vision correction procedure that gently reshapes the surface of the cornea so light can focus more precisely on the retina, improving overall visual clarity. Unlike LASIK, which requires creating a small corneal flap, PRK removes the thin outer layer of the cornea before applying laser treatment.

This flap-free approach preserves more corneal tissue, making PRK a strong option for patients with naturally thinner corneas or other factors that may limit LASIK candidacy. The result is a safe, effective procedure that can reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses while supporting long-term eye health.

Am I a Candidate for PRK Surgery?

PRK is designed to correct common refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It offers many of the same visual benefits as LASIK, but since the surface layer of the cornea is treated differently, PRK may be recommended for patients who are not ideal LASIK candidates.

You may be considered for PRK if you have thinner corneas, certain corneal shapes, dry eye tendencies, or lifestyle and environmental factors that make a flap-based procedure less suitable. For many patients, PRK provides an excellent opportunity to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses and enjoy more visual convenience in everyday life.

What You Need To Know About PRK Eye Surgery

Understanding what happens during the PRK process can help you feel informed and at ease every step of the way. Before your procedure, here’s what you can expect:

Consultation and Evaluation

Your PRK journey begins with a thorough consultation to determine whether this procedure is the best fit for your eyes and vision goals. During this appointment, our team will perform detailed vision assessments, review your medical and ocular history, and discuss what you hope to achieve with vision correction. To ensure accurate measurements, please stop wearing your contact lenses for at least two weeks before your consultation so your corneas can return to their natural shape.

Medical Tests

Your evaluation includes advanced diagnostic testing such as corneal topography and corneal tomography, which map the front and back surfaces of the cornea and measure corneal thickness and curvature. We may also perform a Schirmer’s test to assess you for dry eye. Together with industry-standard measurements and a full clinical review, these tests help us determine whether PRK is the safest and most appropriate vision correction option for you.

What Happens During PRK Eye Surgery?

Our priority is to help you feel relaxed and confident on the day of your PRK procedure. Understanding what to expect during surgery can make the experience more comfortable and help ease any nerves you may have.

Preparing for Surgery

Just like before your consultation, you’ll need to stop wearing your contact lenses for at least two weeks prior to surgery so your corneas can return to their natural shape.

On the day of your procedure, avoid wearing eye makeup, lotions, creams, or perfumes. Be sure to arrange transportation afterward, as your vision may be blurry, and you may still feel the mild effects of any sedatives used during the appointment.

Here’s what you can expect during your PRK procedure:

Local Anesthesia

To keep you comfortable throughout the procedure, you’ll receive numbing eye drops before the laser treatment begins. You may also choose to take a mild sedative to help you stay relaxed during surgery.

The Procedure

During PRK surgery, the outermost layer of your cornea is gently prepared so the treatment area is accessible. Once the surface is ready, your experienced surgeon will use a specialized laser to precisely reshape the cornea, helping light focus more accurately and improving visual clarity.

At Professional Eye Associates, our surgeons use advanced refractive technology and careful, measured techniques to ensure the procedure is performed safely and comfortably. Throughout the process, our team focuses on your well-being, guiding you through each step and providing the attentive, patient-centered care we’re known for.

What To Expect After PRK Surgery

After your PRK procedure, you’ll be able to go home shortly to rest and begin the healing process. It’s normal for your vision to be blurry at first, and recovery typically takes a bit longer than with flap-based procedures. As your corneal surface heals over the next few days, your comfort and clarity will gradually improve.

Post-Operative Care

To support proper healing, it’s important to use the prescribed eye drops and medications exactly as directed and follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions closely. A protective eye shield will be placed over your eyes after the procedure and is typically worn for the first 24 hours, then at bedtime for several days. Avoid rubbing your eyes and refrain from strenuous activities during the early healing period to help your cornea recover comfortably and safely.

Expected Results

Because PRK involves healing on the surface of the cornea, the initial recovery period is longer than with LASIK. It’s normal for vision to improve gradually over several days to weeks as the corneal tissue regenerates and stabilizes. During this time, our team will monitor your progress closely through scheduled follow-up visits to ensure your healing is on track and that you remain as comfortable as possible.
