Dr. Kim specializes in advanced anterior segment and refractive surgery, with additional expertise in complex cataract surgery, premium lens implants, intraocular lens exchange, Yamane scleral fixation, LASIK, and PRK. Additionally, he is one of the few EVO ICL certified surgeons in the northwest Georgia area. He is particularly recognized for managing complex cataract cases, repairing dislocated lens implants, and performing sophisticated vision-restoring procedures. Patients travel from all over the country to see Dr. Kim to treat complex anterior segment problems such as dislocated intraocular lenses, refractive lens exchanges, pupil reconstruction, and to manage various surgical complications.

Dr. Kim’s passion for ophthalmology began at an early age. After witnessing his uncle lose vision from glaucoma and be forced into early retirement as a neurosurgeon, Dr. Kim saw firsthand how profoundly eye disease can affect a person’s quality of life and independence. His interest deepened in high school when he shadowed an ophthalmologist and became fascinated by the precision and complexity of cataract surgery. That fascination grew throughout his medical training and was solidified during residency, where he discovered a love for intricate intraocular procedures.
Today, Dr. Kim cares for patients at Professional Eye’s Dalton, Ft. Oglethorpe, and Chatsworth locations. He is committed to bringing the latest advances in ophthalmology to Northwest Georgia, including safer, more precise surgical techniques, advanced diagnostic technology, and innovative treatment options. Education, Training, & Recognition in Ophthalmology
Dr. Kim earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, cum laude, from Amherst College before pursuing post-baccalaureate studies at Harvard Extension School. He then received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Albany Medical College and completed an Internal Medicine internship and Ophthalmology residency through the Alton Ochsner Clinic Foundation and Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Following residency, Dr. Kim completed a prestigious fellowship in Cornea, Refractive Surgery, and External Diseases at Louisiana State University under the mentorship of renowned ophthalmologists Dr. Herbert Kaufman and Dr. Bruce Barron. In fact, Dr. Kim is the only fellowship-trained cornea & refractive surgeon in Northwest Georgia.
Since joining Professional Eye in 2007, Dr. Kim has established himself as a leader in ophthalmology both locally and nationally. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia, and is a past president of the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology. His expertise has earned him recognition in Newsweek’s Best Eye Doctors in America for three consecutive years (2021, 2022, and 2023), as well as selection as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor.

Dr. Kim has also made lasting contributions to cataract and anterior segment surgery through the development of specialized surgical instruments, including the Kim Double Chopper, Kim Capsular Fornix Hydrodissection Cannula, and Kim Corneal Sweeper. These tools are used to help surgeons perform procedures with greater precision and efficiency. Life Outside Work
When he’s not caring for patients, Dr. Kim enjoys spending quality time with his wife, two teenage children, and their two dogs. He is also an active member of Rock Bridge Community Church and enjoys playing basketball at the Bradley Wellness Center.
