What You Need to Know

Although cosmetic surgery can improve your appearance and possibly your self-esteem, the decision to undergo any surgical procedure should not be taken lightly. Professional Eye Associates recommends the following before you commit to a cosmetic surgery procedure:

  • Be Informed: It is essential that you understand and fully research both the benefits and risks of the procedure you have in mind. There is a wealth of information on the Internet and in our office that will assist you in understanding the surgery you desire.
  • Ask Questions: Your doctor is your best information resource. We encourage and welcome you to ask as many questions as possible during your initial consultation to ensure that you are comfortable with the information you have been given. Do not make a decision to undergo a surgical procedure until your doctor has explained all important information to your satisfaction. Be an active participant in your surgical process.
  • Have Realistic Expectations: Cosmetic surgery will change the way you look, but it may or may not change your life. You should have a clear understanding of why you want to undergo the procedure and what your expectations are for life after surgery. Some people may not be good plastic surgery candidates because they have an unrealistic expectation of what surgery can do for them. It is very important to discuss with your Professional Eye Associates' doctor what your post-surgery expectations are.

Your Initial Consultation

Before your surgery, you will meet with one of our Professional Eye Associates' doctors for an initial consultation. This is your opportunity to ask any questions, discuss goals and expectations, and make sure you fully understand what the procedure entails. The consultation allows you to make sure you feel comfortable with your doctor and our office. Your consultation will be approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

procedures2Your doctor will:

  • Go through your medical history to evaluate any medical condition that may affect the surgical results
  • Clearly answer your questions
  • Welcome questions about your procedure and his professional qualifications, experience, costs, and payment policies
  • Discuss the risks of surgery and possible outcomes
  • Give you detailed information about your procedure
  • If appropriate, offer surgical alternatives without pressuring you to consider unneeded or additional procedures

We encourage you to bring a list of your own questions to this consultation, such as:

  • Am I a good candidate for this procedure? If not, why not?
  • What will be expected of me to get optimal results?
  • What are the risks involved?
  • How long of a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?
  • Will I need to take time off work? If so, how long?

Factors Affecting Your Surgical Outcome

During your initial consultation, your doctor will examine your medical history and project an estimate of your surgical-results. Factors that may affect your final results include:

  • Age
  • Skin type
  • Possible sun-damage
  • General health
  • Genetic background
  • The nature of your condition

At Professional Eye Associates, we do everything possible to ensure that you leave your initial consultation feeling educated, confident in your decision, and comfortable with your doctor.
